Belapana, also known as Bela Pana, is a traditional drink consumed during the festival of Pana Sankranti in the Indian state of Odisha. It holds a significant place in Odia culture and is prepared using indigenous ingredients that have been part of the region’s culinary traditions for centuries. 

The preparation and consumption of Bela Pana symbolises the renewal of life and the transition from the old year to the new.

The primary ingredient is the bael or wood apple fruit, known as bela in Odia. The fruit has cooling and digestive properties and is widely used in traditional medicine. 

To prepare bela pana, the pulp of ripe bael fruit is extracted and mixed with other ingredients such as, milk, yogurt, jaggery (or sugar), water, and spices like black pepper, cardamom, and ginger. 

The mixture is then churned or blended to achieve a smooth consistency. Some variations of belapana may also include grated coconut or nuts and different kinds of fruits like banana or apple for added flavor and texture.
