Kavya Saxena has achieved a goal that many aspire to … she made the trek from a life in the city to an idyllic one as a social entrepreneur. Here is how she did it.
Kavya Saxena’s journey is a remarkable story of dedication, cultural immersion, and social entrepreneurship. Starting her career with the Indian Oil Corporation, Kavya enjoyed the diverse experiences of corporate life, which included extensive travel and interactions with people from various backgrounds. Even during her corporate tenure, she spent weekends exploring nearby villages and towns, deepening her appreciation for the different cultures across India.
However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a significant realisation. With the lockdown in place, Kavya began questioning her urban existence in Gurugram, feeling disconnected from the rural communities she valued.
This period of reflection led her to make a bold decision. As soon as the first lockdown restrictions eased, Kavya embarked on a unique solo journey called #kavyaonquest in October 2020, aimed at documenting rural crafts and culture. This project was in collaboration with Mahindra & Mahindra, highlighting her commitment to showcasing India’s rural heritage.
Kavya’s journey didn’t end with her travels. She chose to leave urban life behind and now lives in a forest in Koraput, Odisha. Here, she collaborates with Adivasi communities, turning the region’s turmeric into specialty bath products.
This initiative not only promotes local produce but also empowers an entire village, creating sustainable livelihoods. Her efforts extend further as she has adopted a village where local women craft items from a special variety of grass, fostering rural entrepreneurship.
In addition to her grassroots work, Kavya shares her knowledge by teaching rural entrepreneurship at the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) and The Nas Academy in Singapore. Her dedication to preserving and promoting rural culture while empowering local communities highlights her inspiring journey from corporate life to the heart of India’s villages.
