The media’s role in India gets multiple hues including an exceptional expectation of societal galvanization on issues of the marginalized. Purpose independent of paying readers from vested section deeply invested in differential change or status quo is difficult at any time. Given high and inter-generational inequality, social and economic fragilities, and fault lines as a society we have to challenge long-standing assumptions and social constructs. Narratives are critical to advance issues that matter to the marginalized, build public opinion and support for a just and equitable society, and demand the better endowed. Media disproportionately shapes public opinion its ability to amplify gives way to expectations. Alternatives of digital or social media have democratized communication however, has limits to shaping narratives.
