Rural charm meets royal heritage at this 250-year-old haveli
Nestled in the dusty district of Alwar is a hamlet called Burja – the kind you wouldn't travel to unless there's a reason, and that's exactly what we're about to give you.
Nestled in the dusty district of Alwar is a hamlet called Burja – the kind you wouldn't travel to unless there's a reason, and that's exactly what we're about to give you.
It’s not often that a dimly lit road in a small hamlet leads to a surprising sight. But when you open the unassuming gates of Burja Haveli, a vibrant stage with amphitheatre seating awaits, accompanied by a charming ‘bar’ sign. Just a short walk away lies the laden-with-old-world-charm mansion, a well-preserved testament to Rajasthan’s traditional architecture. It is inherited by Upender Singh Rathore, a scion of the erstwhile zamindar family of Burja.
Standing tall like a time capsule from 250 years ago, the haveli is meticulously maintained to evoke the feeling of stepping back in time. Its enchanting ambience instantly transports you to a bygone era. The haveli has been welcoming guests for almost two decades now. It offers a pleasant experience in a small village with a population of just over 3,500.
“At Burja Haveli, we aim to treat every guest like royalty, ensuring a memorable and regal stay,” Vaibhav Kaushik, the manager of the property, said.
Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted by local village women who skillfully prepare fresh jowar rotis in the tranquil courtyard. Some of these women have been serving Upender Singh’s family for over three decades. They infuse their culinary creations with a rich heritage.
The menu features an array of simple yet flavoursome vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, with masala gatta (spicy chickpea nuggets), dal-baati-churma (baked wheat balls served with lentils and powdered sweetened cereal), and Burja special chicken being the recommended local delicacies.
A word of caution – if you prefer milder flavours, it would be better that you specify your spice preference to avoid the overwhelming Rajasthani red chilli.
The rooms at Burja Haveli are bright, clean and modest, providing a comfortable retreat. For those seeking a touch of exclusivity, select options offer a private sitting area outside, perfect for savouring a cup of tea amidst the serenity. This offbeat hotel prides itself on offering an immersive rural experience.
Prices for a super deluxe room, suitable for double occupancy, start at Rs. 2,600 plus taxes.
As the first rays of the sun gently caress the haveli, you wake up to the soothing sounds of bells and the fragrance of incense, as the family priest performs the morning aarti around the property.
“We perform this sacred ritual daily to invoke peace and prosperity for all our guests,” explained Pandit Mahesh Kumar Sharma, the priest.
While staying at Burja Haveli, you can take the opportunity to explore the nearby tourist attractions. Siliserh, a man-made lake once utilised by Alwar’s erstwhile royal family for hunting. It still retains its tranquil beauty. This is about 23 kilometres from the haveli and will take you about 45 minutes to reach.
About 30 kilometres away is the Sariska Tiger Reserve, where the possibility of spotting the majestic big cat awaits. For panoramic views, head to Bala Quila (about 15 kilometres away), perched atop the ancient Aravali mountain range.
