From training elephants to healing people with herbal medicines, these heart-driven Padma Shri recipients of 2024 are raising the bar in social impact, and establishing a legacy through their contributions.
The Padma Shri awards this year have honoured some really inspiring rural Indian women. From art promotion to wildlife conservation, the contributions of these women in diverse fields not only empower their communities but also symbolise the strength and impact of women in shaping India’s cultural and social landscape.
1. K Chellammal
An inspiring organic farmer from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 69-year-old K Chellammal is credited for developing damage control measures for coconut and palm trees. Her work showcases a commitment to sustainable agriculture, benefiting the local ecosystem.
2. Parbati Baruah
A rare woman elephant trainer hailing from Goalpara in Assam, Parbati Baruah received the Padma Shri at the age of 67. Credited for implementing scientific practices to reduce human-elephant conflict, her contribution goes beyond her unique role, symbolising a harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.
3. Takdira Begum
A kantha embroidery artist from West Bengal, Takdira Begum was honoured with the Padma Shri at the age of 70. Her lifelong dedication to the craft has not only enriched the cultural heritage of Bengal but has also contributed significantly to the global revival of this art.
4. Smriti Rekha Chakma
An accomplished Chakma Loinloom shawl weaver from Tripura, Smriti Rekha Chakma received the Padma Shri at the age of 63. Providing training in indigenous methods, her efforts not only preserve traditional weaving techniques but also empower local communities through skill development.
5. Chami Murmu
A tribal social worker from Seraikela Kharsawan in Jharkhand, Chami Murmu has carried out impactful work in environmental conservation and women empowerment. The achievements of the 52-year-old Padma Shri recipient include planting of 30 lakh trees, exemplifying the positive change possible through grassroots efforts.
6. Yanung Jamoh Lego
A traditional herbal medicine expert from East Siang in Arunachal Pradesh, Yanung Jamoh Lego has been working for the revival of the Adi tribe’s traditional healing system and promoting natural healthcare. Lego, 58, has been recognised for preserving and promoting indigenous knowledge for human well-being.
7. Naseem Bano
With 45 years of her life dedicated to the art of chikankari embroidery, Naseem Bano from Uttar Pradesh was honoured with the Padma Shri at the age of 61. Her expertise in this form of intricate hand embroidery has not only created beautiful pieces but has also become a source of inspiration for aspiring artisans.
8. Chitta Ranjan Debbarma
A dedicated spiritual leader from Gomati in Tripura, Chitta Ranjan Debbarma, 61, has been committed to providing education to tribal children. The work reflects a profound understanding of the importance of spiritual guidance in shaping young minds.
