As India celebrated National Youth Day on 12 January 2025, Village Square met the country’s rural youth to inquire about their aspirations for the new year. Hear them share their 2025 wishlist.
India is a country with a large young population across diverse cultures and states. More than 50% of the country’s population is below the age of 25. To amplify their voices the National Youth Day, or Rashtriya Yuva Diwas, is celebrated on January 12 each year. The day also commemorates the legacy of spiritual thinker and philosopher Swami Vivekananda, who ignited in young people the desire to unleash their full potential.
In India, the term youth refers to people within the age group of 15 to 29. These people are the most dynamic section of society, and a number of them reside in rural areas. The changemakers of tomorrow are going to be the rural young, so Village Square interacted with some of them to find out what their personal and social goals are on the occasion of National Youth Day.
While many of them admitted to wanting to create better circumstances for themselves, others said they seek to make a difference in various sections of rural communities. Their admissions are both heartwarming and inspiring, and underscore the potential of the young who hail from the hinterland to better the collective lot of the nation.
