Horse-drawn carriages have been the choice mode of transport for residents of Sopore, in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the pressure to modernise could take a toll on this environmentally-friendly option soon.
In the apple-rich township of Sopore in North Kashmir, the timeless tradition of tongas, or horse-drawn carriages, is still preserved. While modern vehicles dominate the roads, these resilient tongawallas (horse carriage drivers) remain steadfast in their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. For them, tongas are not merely a mode of transportation; they are a symbol of tradition and an integral part of their identity.
Despite the challenges, including the slow pace of travel and the odors associated with horse-drawn carriages, many locals continue to choose tongas over modern alternatives. These horse carts offer a unique, eco-friendly option that contributes to reducing vehicular pollution. In a rapidly modernising world, tongas provide a vital link to the past, representing a way of life that has been cherished for centuries.
For generations, tongas have been an essential part of Sopore’s landscape, transporting goods and passengers through its narrow lanes and bustling markets. They are more than just vehicles; they are a livelihood for many families, deeply woven into the town’s social and economic fabric.
As urbanisation transforms Sopore, the future of these horse-drawn carriages remains uncertain. However, there is a glimmer of hope that this cherished tradition will persist, supported by those who value its cultural significance.
The tongawallas of Sopore are a testament to resilience and dedication in the face of change. Their determination to keep the tradition alive despite the pressure to modernise speaks volumes about their commitment to preserving their heritage. As Sopore evolves, the fate of the tongas will reveal whether this symbol of tradition can withstand the test of time or become a relic of the past.
For now, the echoes of history continue to resonate through the town’s streets, a reminder of a rich cultural legacy that deserves to endure.
